Leader of Sunderland City Council

Cllr Chris Eynon, was elected as the Leader of Sunderland City Council in May 2026.

Representing the Redhouse ward, Cllr Eynon was born and raised in the city, before studying at the University of Sunderland gaining a Master of Science (MSc) in Management and Finance. He continues to live locally, maintaining close ties to the communities he serves.

As Leader of the Council, Cllr Eynon represents Sunderland on the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority Cabinet and on supporting, regional partnerships.

With a professional background in financial services, Cllr Eynon is focused on delivering efficient, transparent and sustainable local government, particularly in the context of ongoing financial pressures facing councils.  He is committed to working collaboratively with communities, councillors and partners across the public and private sectors to ensure services respond to local needs and make a meaningful difference to residents.

Cllr Eynon is passionate about local history and sport, and is committed to supporting economic growth and creating opportunities across Sunderland, ensuring that communities benefit from future investment and development.
