About Reading

Reading is a modern, thriving town and a major economic player in the south-east. It is home to a diverse population which reflects the rich multi-cultural heritage of modern Britain.

The county town of Berkshire, Reading is a unitary authority with a tight geographic footprint delivering services to over 170,000 residents.

Situated in the heart of the Thames Valley and with great connectivity, Reading has transformed its economy from trade and manufacturing into a centre for key regional health, education, retail, accountancy, and legal services. It is also home to the University of Reading where the famous climate stripes were created by Professor Ed Hawkins.

It is set in a stunning natural landscape with the rivers Thames and Kennet running through the borough. It is also served by excellent physical and digital connections. A place of history and HQs, culture and connectivity, leadership and learning, Reading radiates influence as a place of progress and potential, which will only increase now the Elizabeth Line has opened.

Reading is a crucible of creativity, known worldwide for its festivals, events and entertainment. With a booming film industry, this is a town of talent, made infinitely richer by its diversity.

Reading is also a town of contrasts. Our powerful economy and areas of affluence, sit alongside some of the most deprived communities in the country. It has been ranked 3rd most unequal ‘city’ in terms of wealth. Tackling these stark inequalities is at the heart of everything we do as a Council.
