Culture, Place and Development cover
May 6, 2025
Produced by the Key Cities Innovation Network, Culture, Place and Development is a collection of peer-reviewed papers reporting on innovative approaches using culture to develop successful places for the benefit of their populations.

Developing ideas presented at the Key Cities Innovation Network Conference at the University of Bradford on 27 November 2024, this report presents projects which have been selected not only for their local relevance but also their potential for replicating in other places.

The featured innovations are:

  • New narratives for Bradford: honouring stories of faith and culture that have made us who we are as a foundation for creating new ones (University of Bradford)
  • Leveraging emotional geographies to boost community empowerment: given the move to larger devolved authorities, we’ll need new strategies to connect with local communities (University of Essex)
  • Creative Coastal Futures: How inclusive growth can unlock creative innovation in remote coastal areas (University of Plymouth)
  • Collaborative participatory mapping of community knowledge: a new approach to understanding the spaces used by minoritised groups (University of Southampton)
  • Unlocking the hidden, marginalised and particular: civic participation, storytelling and scaling sustainable place-based archives (Coventry University)
  • Unlocking meanwhile spaces, the case for a regional approach: Can meanwhile spaces unlock long-term social capital for vibrant, liveable towns and cities? (Southampton Institute of Arts and Humanities and Countryside and Community Research Institute)
  • From the Other…10 years of Cultural Partnership Working in Salford: Channelling the heritage and spirit of place through cross-sector partnership (University of Salford and Salford City Council)

The compendium also includes a case study of successful civic partnership in the City of Sunderland.
